Perfect Rides Description

Peter’s Exploratory Rides For the Enjoyment of Country Tracks

The rides start at 8:00 AM on the last Sunday of every month normally from towns to the north and east of Adelaide.

They are 50 –70 km long on country tracks varying from made gravel roads to indistinct tracks on Road Reserves with an average speed of 12 –15 kph to enjoy the surrounding countryside.  Many of the tracks are unrideable in wet weather,  making it impossible to plan rides to far in advance. In wet weather gravel and even bitumen roads will be utilised . The details of each ride will be posted on the chat group :-http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AdelaideTouringCyclists on the Monday of the week before the ride.

There are normally no towns, shops or facilities along the route so it is essential to bring all food and water for the day. Lunch and morning tea is taken somewhere along the track.

Any bike with reasonably wide tires will do, but front suspension bike will be more comfortable. Bikes must be in good condition. Tools, pump, spare tube & puncture repair kit must be carried to allow repairs to be made trackside.

The areas ridden through are relatively remote, frequently out of mobile telephone range. Passing traffic is virtually zero and farmhouses, stations etc may not be habitated. Thus Riders must be self-sufficient. The leader carries a UHF radio for emergency contact but this cannot be relied on for contact due to its limited range.

Navigation is done by a combination of topographic maps and GPS so the group will not get lost!

The start is frequently 1 – 2 hours drive from Adelaide. Driving up the night before and staying in Hostels, Hotels, B&B, Camping etc can offset the early start. The cost of travel to and from the ride can be defrayed by sharing vehicles (Peter often has one spare spot). Contact Peter or use the chat room to organise these.

The photo on the home page of the web site shows the essence of a perfect ride. This was taken on a ride from Hallett to Tourilie Gorge and return showing the magnificent view from the top of a hill near Gibsons Gap. The track is a public access road reserve through a farm property. It is graded dirt with a scattering of small rocks to hold it together. The view is of wonderful green tree studded valley extending for miles.

Each year there is normally a PERFECT camping trip on the October long weekend and a longer 1 - 3 week trip around April May. The aim of these trips is to get right out in the bush somewhere in SA, NSW or VIC.
