Beautiful Enjoyment of Superb Tracks
BEST rides are 40 45km of country riding on surfaces from made gravel roads to single tracks with maybe some bitumen thrown in.
They will be held on the second Sunday of every month from towns within about one hours drive of Tea Tree Gully starting at 9:00 AM.
Normally Morning Tea will be trackside on the ride so bring supplies and water. (Some rides may have a stop in a town refer to the ride description for details.)
Finishing time will be about 1:00 PM without a stop for lunch. (This will be reviewed after a couple of ride to see if we do finish by 1:00 PM or if riders want to spend longer on the ride with a lunch stop.)
The pace will be varied to suit the slowest rider but is anticipated to average about 12 kph on the dirt. Any bike with tires wider than 30 mm will do but you may find it more comfortable on a bike with suspension.
The rides can be enjoyed in their own right or used as a stepping stone to the longer PERFECT Rides.

Perfect Rides Description
Peters Exploratory Rides For the Enjoyment of Country Tracks
The rides start at 8:00 AM on the last Sunday of every month normally from towns to the north and east of Adelaide.
They are 50 70 km long on country tracks varying from made gravel roads to indistinct tracks on Road Reserves with an average speed of 12 15 kph to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Many of the tracks are unrideable in wet weather, making it impossible to plan rides to far in advance. In wet weather gravel and even bitumen roads will be utilised . The details of each ride will be posted on the chat group :-http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AdelaideTouringCyclists on the Monday of the week before the ride.
There are normally no towns, shops or facilities along the route so it is essential to bring all food and water for the day. Lunch and morning tea is taken somewhere along the track.
Any bike with reasonably wide tires will do, but front suspension bike will be more comfortable. Bikes must be in good condition. Tools, pump, spare tube & puncture repair kit must be carried to allow repairs to be made trackside.
The areas ridden through are relatively remote, frequently out of mobile telephone range. Passing traffic is virtually zero and farmhouses, stations etc may not be habitated. Thus Riders must be self-sufficient. The leader carries a UHF radio for emergency contact but this cannot be relied on for contact due to its limited range.
Navigation is done by a combination of topographic maps and GPS so the group will not get lost!
The start is frequently 1 2 hours drive from Adelaide. Driving up the night before and staying in Hostels, Hotels, B&B, Camping etc can offset the early start. The cost of travel to and from the ride can be defrayed by sharing vehicles (Peter often has one spare spot). Contact Peter or use the chat room to organise these.
The photo on the home page of the web site shows the essence of a perfect ride. This was taken on a ride from Hallett to Tourilie Gorge and return showing the magnificent view from the top of a hill near Gibsons Gap. The track is a public access road reserve through a farm property. It is graded dirt with a scattering of small rocks to hold it together. The view is of wonderful green tree studded valley extending for miles.
Each year there is normally a PERFECT camping trip on the October long weekend and a longer 1 - 3 week trip around April May. The aim of these trips is to get right out in the bush somewhere in SA, NSW or VIC.

The 30-30 Thursday Evenings 6:15pm.
Lights Required In Winter.
This ride is fast and very fast so you will need a road bike. Everyone will be given an opportunity to exert themselves to the utmost and its good to have warmed up as you ride to the start. It is also team training so there is an emphasis on riding as a group, taking turns at the front, drafting out of the wind behind the person in front and cycling as a group safely.
The course is from the Henley Square, north to the Semaphore roundabout, back south to Glenelg then return to the Henley Square. Some sections are traditionally fast and some slow.
There is also now a 25-25 running at the same time. The speed is an average of 25kph and the course is 25km. So while the top speed will sometimes be above 30kph this group does not drop people behind. The target of the 25-25 can be to finish at the Henley square before the 30-30 riders. All new riders joining the group should start with the 25-25 to learn and ensure group riding skills are safe.
There is a social aspect to all cycling and the 30-30 does not neglect this feature. We stop and chat at the Henley Square before and afterwards and some ride to Glenelg for a visit to a hotel for serious story telling.
